The French word is from the verbal root of trebucher (now trébucher) : trebuch- + diminutive noun suffix -et, trebucher (10th century) meant "to overthrow, to bring down"
Long before powder charges and fire direction centers, crews were doing the same basic math with counterweights and ropes — range, trajectory, timing. The trebuchet was indirect fire before indirect fire had a name.
