According to legend, Saint Barbara's father imprisoned her in a tower and was struck down by lightning after her death — which is how she became the saint invoked against sudden, violent death by fire and explosion. Artillerymen have claimed her as their patron for centuries, and December 4th is still observed as her feast day across artillery branches worldwide.
